Officer Struck, Injured By Alleged DUI Driver

ELK GROVE, Calif. (CBS13) -- An Elk Grove Police Officer was injured late Saturday night while performing a routine traffic stop, authorities said.

The officer was standing next to his on the side of the road near the intersection of Big Horn Boulevard and Bruceville Road at about 11:00 p.m. Saturday when 24-year-old Matthew Layug collided with him, police said.

The officer, whose identity has not been released, was rushed into surgery and is expected to be hospitalized for at least a couple more days, but should recover from his injuries.

Layug is facing felony DUI charges and is being held on $60,000. He declined a request for interview.
