UPDATED: Southbound I-5 In Stockton Reopened Following Officer-Involved Shooting
STOCKTON (CBS13) - Southbound Interstate 5 in Stockton was shutdown most of the morning Thursday, following an officer-involved shooting.
The closure was between Alpine Avenue and Country Club Boulevard.
The incident began at 1 a.m. as a homicide suspect was fleeing from California Highway Patrol officers, and ended with him being shot by Stockton police.
Stockton Police Department spokesperson Officer Joe Silva said the suspect's vehicle broke down on the freeway. The man then exited the car, armed with a knife.
Fearing for his life, a Stockton officer opened fire after the suspect ignored orders to drop his weapon.
"One Stockton police officer fired their weapon at the suspect several times. The suspect was struck at least one time," said Silva.
Authorities say the 43-year-old suspect, who has not been identified, was wanted for murder in San Jose and domestic violence in Merced County.
Silva says the suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he died.
Southbound lanes were reopened just before 11:30 a.m.
