UPDATE: Suspect Fatally Shot After Bank Robbery, Police Chase In Folsom
FOLSOM (CBS13) - A suspect was shot and killed after an attempted bank robbery in Folsom early Tuesday evening led to a chase and deadly confrontation with officers.
The robbery occurred at 5:11 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Bank on 1113 East Bidwell St. The suspect took off on foot with police officers giving chase.
Shauna McElroy got a glimpse of the chase moments before the suspect was shot and killed.
"He was a skinny guy, Caucasian type, no shirt, baggy-type Dickie pants," she said, "and I saw him bookin' it."
Folsom police say the man in his 20s robbed the Wells Fargo on East Bidwell. Though no weapon was used to threaten employees, someone reported, he had an assault rifle.
An off-duty officer spotted him on the run toward the nearby Target. Sacramento and Folsom police as well as Sacramento County sheriff's deputies joined in the foot chase, which took a very unexpected turn.
"He climbed on the roof of the Target," Folsom Police Sgt. Jason Browning said. "I don't know how he climbed up. I don't think he had superpowers or anything else. He just got on the roof of the Target."
He somehow managed to jump down and get into a nearby neighborhood. Cops say he was dropping backpacks of evidence along the way as he hopped fences from backyard to backyard.
"My little girl said 'The cops are coming,' and about that time, I look out and that's when I knew it was a little more serious," McElroy said.
She wasn't taking any chances.
"I turned around and headed down my hallway and started locking my back doors," she said.
It's a good thing she did. Eventually, the man reportedly ran right through a home with a couple and their kids inside.
"At some point he turned around and ran out the front of the house where our officers happened to be," Browning said.
Rather than surrender, he ran back into the house. A Folsom police officer and Sacramento County sheriff's deputy followed him in. The suspect was shot once in the back in a back bedroom by the sheriff's deputy.
Nobody from that family was hurt. A Sacramento police officer suffered a minor injury during the chase.
The suspect's name has not been released. The deputy, who has been with the sheriff's department for 24 years, was placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
