Off-Duty Sutter County Sheriff's Deputy Killed In Suspected DUI Crash
YUBA COUNTY(CBS13) – An off-duty Sutter County sheriff's deputy was killed Wednesday night when the car he was riding in crashed on Highway 20 due to the driver's "high level of intoxication," according to the California Highway Patrol.
Rory Roguski, 25, of Yuba City was pronounced dead at the scene after the 1999 Ford Mustang he was riding in crashed on Highway 20 near McGanney Lane in rural Yuba County.
The driver, 26-year-old Erin Marie Jasper of Oregon House, was arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter after being taken by air ambulance to Sutter Roseville Medical Center.
Sutter County Sheriff J. Paul Parker called it a tragedy for his department. Roguski was a reserve deputy for two years before being sworn in full time in July, Parker said.
Roguski's family issued a statement saying: "Our family and friends have suffered a huge loss with this tragic accident. We have lost a great son, brother, nephew and friend. Rory was a big guy with an even bigger heart."
According to the CHP, Jasper allowed the Mustang to drift off the roadway as she approached a left-hand curve, causing her to lose control. The car skidded across both lanes of the highway and collided head-on with a rock wall on the south side of the road. It then slid back across both lanes and came to rest on the north side of the road.
Neither was wearing a seat belt, the CHP said.
