Off-duty Officer Shoots, Kills Rampaging Man

MODESTO, Calif. (CBS13) -- An off-duty California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a man who attacked him during a vandalism spree in a Modesto neighborhood, authorities said.

The deceased man, whose identity has not been released, had apparently escaped from the San Joaquin County Mental Health Facility on Saturday afternoon, fleeing through a canal and running through a residential neighborhood.

The man apparently began injuring himself while smashing out windows and threatened several people, according to the Modesto Police Department.

The off-duty officer tried to approach the man on the 3700 block of Densmore Lane, but the man apparently attacked the officer.

The man suffered fatal injuries in the shooting. Investigators are at the scene.
