Oakland Fire Leaves 1 Dead

OAKLAND (AP) — Oakland fire officials say a 55-year-old man is dead after a fire in his home Sunday morning.

Battalion Chief Adrian Sheppard told the Oakland Tribune (http://bit.ly/uYXqAu ) that the man, whose name has not been released, appears to have succumbed to smoke inhalation as he slept.

Sheppard says three other people who lived in the single-family home as renters were able to escape the blaze.

The fire, which was reported around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, appears to have started above a garage. Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire.

The fire in Oakland Sunday comes after a blaze in an apartment complex in nearby Alameda forced 26 people from their homes Saturday afternoon.

There were no injuries in that blaze. Damage to the complex was estimated to be $1.5 million.
