North Highlands Residents Fed Up With Recent Gang Shootings
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) — The father of a 10-year-old girl killed in her living room by suspected gang gunfire says he's fed up with the area and moving.
It's been almost two weeks since Ernesto Campos' daughter, Elvira, was shot to death when two men walked up to their North Highlands home and opened fire.
"We are all still very sad," he said. "We didn't expect this."
As the family copes, deputies say the home was likely targeted because of the possible gang ties of Ernesto's 20-year-old son -- ties he isn't aware of.
"I haven't seen him in a gang," Ernesto said. "And he knows I don't like that kind of stuff."
The community in North Highlands says it's ready to take a stand.
Kourtney Light was friends with Elvira. She and her mother helped organize this evening's rally and walk with the help of the Guardian Angels.
"To tell the people who did this and the gangs that kill people that this is our neighborhood, and don't mess around in our neighborhood," Light said.
Ernesto, who was also injured in the shooting, says he's in the process of moving out as he waits for answers.
"All I want is for them to find those who are guilty."
