North Highlands Officer Shoots Suspect In Front Of Church
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) - A North Highlands Community Church driveway turned into the center of a shooting investigation.
"I guess dude took off running or something. They told him to stop, or 'I'll shoot' and they shot the dude," said witness Michael Johnson.
Undercover officers were on patrol in a white unmarked truck when a brief exchange turned violent fast.
Sheriff's deputes say their Gang Task Force Officers tried making contact with a man who ran the other way.
One officer gave chase on foot.
"During the foot pursuit, the individual who was running retrieved a hand gun. The officer fired, striking the suspect once," said Sacramento Sheriff's department Sgt. Jason Ramos.
Deputies say the suspect is a validated gang member and that his gun was found at the scene.
A witness said he never saw a weapon.
"I didn't see the dude pull out no gun or nothing," said Johnson.
It's another officer involved shooting, in front a community church, in a community known for its heavy gang activity.
"It's been getting worse every year," said witness Robert Hartley.
