Intense fire rips through North Highlands apartment building, more than 40 people displaced
NORTH HIGHLANDS – A raging fire tore through a Sacramento County apartment complex overnight, leaving dozens of people without a home.
Metro Fire of Sacramento crews responded to the scene on A Street in North Highlands around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters were immediately met by intense flames, with the wind being a major factor.
Crews evacuated a total of 32 units across two buildings. Every single unit of one of those buildings were damaged, with nine suffering major damage.
The other 16-unit building, while not being damaged, was still in the dark due to power lines getting burned.
Metro Fire says more than 40 people have been displaced across both buildings. They're working with the Red Cross and the apartment manager to try and find shelter for those people. The people from the units just without power may be able to return once SMUD restores service.
Three people were taken to the hospital during the incident, two of them in stable condition. The other person was taken by a neighbor and their condition is unknown.
Firefighters say it is fortunate that there weren't more injuries, and that no other buildings were damaged. More than 85 firefighters responded to the scene to battle the flames.
Exactly what started the fire is under investigation.
