NorCal Town Played Huge Part In The Civil War
COPPEROPOLIS, Calaveras County (CBS13) - As the nation is marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, a small town in Northern California is being remembered for its involvement in that war.
The town of Copperopolis in Calaveras County supplied the Union Army with most of the copper needed for bullets and shells during our nation's bloodiest battle.
The original armory building still stands tall in the heart of downtown Copperopolis.
People can even find original mining tools at the old corner saloon.
Locals say more than a million dollars worth of copper was shipped east during the first year.
