New Woodland Parking Lot Could Leave Stray Cats Hungry
WOODLAND (CBS13) — A Woodland woman's efforts to feed and care for a group of cats could come to an end, because of a new parking lot.
Helen Tuscher, 81, worked for decades in what is now a building abandoned after her employer closed shop. Early on, she noticed the cats.
"Those cats were watching me eat a piece of bread, and I felt guilty," she said. "So I gave them some of my sandwich and I was 'Oh my God, they're hungry.'"
She's been feeding the now nearly two-dozen cats now since 1973. But her furry friends may have to find a new home, as Yolo County is considering turning the field they roam around into a parking lot.
County officials have told her she has to either move her beloved cats, or just stop feeding them altogether.
"I don't want them to go hungry, but I don't know what to do either," she said of the cats. "That's all they know is me feeding them."
She says she's tried to approach some of her neighbors and asked if they would allow her to feed her cats, but so far they have said no. She plans to attend tonight's city council meeting and ask officials to help her find a solution.
