New Riverfront Development Gains Steam

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A riverfront development project that has been in the planning stages for years is finally getting off the ground, Yolo County officials said.

The new Bridge District in West Sacramento is the first big riverfront project in the region in quite some time, and promoters say it could become the new downtown hub for the Capitol region without even being inside Sacramento city limits.

More than 5,000 new homes are being planned for the new neighborhood, all within walking distance of Raley Field, and the proposed district's central park will be line with ancient olive trees, according to developer Fulcrum Property.

The river walk area has been extended from north of Tower Bridge to Interstate 80 and is already open.

Yolo County Supervisor Mike McGowan called the project a "grand slam in the World Series," and said he believes the project could become the new hub of the Sacramento region.

The project will take quite some time to complete -- the first new homes won't be finished until 2014 -- but county officials said they consider the project an important step in the community's future.
