Nevada Wildlife Panel To Weigh Bid To Block Bear Hunt
RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada wildlife commissioners are ready to consider an administrative appeal from a group of conservationists and Lake Tahoe residents who want to block the first legal bear hunt in the state's history.
The commission is scheduled Thursday afternoon to consider the petition filed by NoBearHuntNV.org. The state panel already is accepting applications for tags for the black bear hunt season set to begin on Aug. 20 with a limit of 20 bears to be killed, including only six females.
Among other things, the critics say the commission failed to consider the "aesthetic and economic value" of bears to local tourism.
Biologists estimate there are 200 to 300 adult black bears in Nevada's Carson Range near Lake Tahoe. Commission Chairman Scott Raine says killing 20 a year won't do any harm.
