Nevada Wildfire Threatening Homes
TOPAZ RANCH ESTATES (CBS13) – A wind-whipped wildfire has destroyed two homes and more than a dozen outbuildings in Douglas County, Nevada and more than one hundred homes are threatened.
Some residents are being evacuated.
"Hectic. Scary," said resident Barbara Steed as the fire burned a couple of football field lengths away from her home.
The fire has burned about 4,400 acres by about 9:30 p.m. in around the Topaz Ranch Estates community, which is located in southern Douglas County along State Route 208, just east of the junction between US Highway 395 and State Route 208.
The fire was only 10 percent contained early Wednesday morning.
Douglas County officials say no deaths or injuries have been reported. The fire continues to move to the northeast pushed by gusty winds.
A hiker who called 911 reporting that he was stranded by the fire has been successfully evacuated by helicopter.
Evacuated residents can find shelter at the Topaz Ranch Estates Community Center. Contact the American Red Cross at (775) 856-1000 for more information. Evacuated large animals can be taken to the Douglas County Fairgrounds and small pets to the animal shelter in Gardnerville.
