Neighbors, Children Help Stop Manteca House Fire

MANTECA (CBS13) — A group of neighbors and children put themselves in the line of fire to save a burning home.

Carol Castro and her 10- and 16-year-old cousins quickly jumped into action when they noticed flames coming from a home on the block.

"I just ran over there," Carol said. "My little cousin helped me get the water hose,"

While the other youngster knocked on the door to get a mother and baby out of the burning home, help from the adjacent street arrived.

"It was an adrenaline rush, I'll tell you that," said Matt Hampton.

He jumped two fences and quickly came face-to-face with flames.

"Luckily there were buckets over there and I just grabbed a bucket," he said. "They had a pool and scooped water out of the pool and started water on the fire."

Neighbors managed to stop the fire that destroyed this shed from doing severe damage to the home, or worse.

"It could have been more houses than one, so luckily it didn't spread to the others," said Hampton.

Neighbors say much of the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived.

The homeowner, who was cleaning up the damage on Monday, doesn't know what sparked the fire, but he's grateful neighbors risked their lives to save his home, his wife and his baby girl.
