Natomas Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 In Critical Condition
NATOMAS (CBS13) – A Saturday night shooting in Natomas left one man dead and another in critical condition, the Sacramento Police Department said on Sunday.
The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. along Streamline Street, just east of the Arena Boulevard exit off of Interstate 5.
According to the police department, several callers reported hearing gunshots.
"Aw man, we heard a lot, a lot of shots," Edward Purcell, a neighbor, said.
"I heard a volley of shots," Matthew Heminger, another neighbor, said.
Officers arrived at the scene and found the two victims, who police say were both shot at least one time each.
"I was worried, getting my kids to safety. Make sure they stay safe, get the lights off, get them down," Purcell said. "It sounded like it was on my property, in my backyard."
The deceased was pronounced dead at the scene. Sacramento police said though the second victim was in critical condition, they have since been deemed stable.
"I kept looking and I'm like, 'Oh my God, that's somebody lying there," Purcell said. "And then I looked over here and there was another person moving around in my neighbor's yard. And I was like I better call 9-1-1."
One neighbor, Maggie Baltazar, said that one of the bullets came right through her front window and landed in her kitchen wall while she was washing dishes.
"Then I heard bang, bang, bang, and I was curious. I came here about to check and then that's when the bullet came in," Baltazar said.
She wonders on Sunday what could've happened if she hadn't moved out of the bullet's eventual path about 15 minutes earlier.
"Maybe I wouldn't be talking here anymore, you know? If they're shooting it like that. And I think the one who shot that was the one who was laying down," Baltazar said.
It was a shocking and scary scene in this quiet Natomas neighborhood that some never thought would happen.
"The best thing is that people play their music too loud when they drive past. A shooting is obviously different. Obviously shocking," Heminger said.
"Especially after dark, there's never ever anybody outside. And gunshots here? No. Never," Purcell said.
Information regarding a suspect was not available, but Sacramento police said homicide detectives are canvassing the area for evidence and potential witnesses. A $1,000 reward is being offered to anyone who may have information beneficial to the investigation.
Sacramento Police also said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident. The identity of the deceased will be released once next of kin has been notified.
