Busy Day For Firefighters, Battling Six Different Fires In Vacaville

VACAVILLE (CBS13) - It was a busy Saturday for Vacaville and Solano County area firefighters who battled six different fires off of the I-80 interchange and the 505.

Several fires closed down a portion of Interstate 505 and threatened structures in Vacaville, according to the Vacaville Fire Department.

"Look at how close we are," Gladys Basco, who lives nearby explained.

A small hill just outside her home, she said, stood between her and the flames. Basco was napping when she was woken up by her husband to see the smoke. She wondered then what would happen next.

"Is my house going to burn?" Basco said. "I have to pray to the Lord."

She witnessed one of the six different fires that sparked up around the area. Fire crews were spread thin at first to battle the blazes.

"It makes it very challenging to fight a fire like this, because you're having to report to several locations," Kris Concepcion, the Vacaville Fire Chief said.

With a collaborative effort from other area firefighting agencies, Concepcion said the flames were knocked down within an hour. At one point, the 505 was shut down, and traffic was diverted. What was left in the aftermath was only torched grass and burned street signs.

Fire Chief Concepcion's message to all: Be careful in triple-digit heat.

"When it's this hot and this dry – those sparks can start a fire very quickly," Concepcion said - especially referring to the thought that this fire could have been sparked due to a trailer dragging a chain on the highway. Though, the cause is still under investigation.
