Mothers Heartbroken, Hopeful At Sacramento County Jail
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Margaret Paiz walks a lonely stretch in front of the Sacramento County Jail.
For this mother of six, soon to be seven, it's fair to say this Mother's Day has a more somber tone.
"I'll have my kids with me but we still won't be a true family, so it'll be bittersweet," said Paiz.
Bittersweet because her fiancé, the father of her unborn baby, is behind bars and has been for four months.
One woman knows how she feels.
"She doesn't need to be here, she needs to be at home," the woman said.
Her daughter, also a mom, is in jail and likely won't be out by Sunday. Ask her if it will still feel like Mother's Day and she's quick to answer.
"No, of course not, I mean, I want her home," the woman said.
Roslyn Habersham wants her son home for the special day, but knows she won't be getting any flowers from him.
"You cry and you wish it hadn't happened but it did, and there's nothing you can do about it," said Habersham.
Cici Peterson is doing something about her melancholy Mother's Day.
This single mother of three, who sits in a wheelchair with a broken leg, says she's tired of having a broken heart.
So she's decided to give herself a Mother's Day gift you won't find in any flower shop, a boyfriend behind bars who's corresponded with but never met.
Some people get their best Mother's Day present from a flower shop or candy store but Peterson has come to the jail. Why?
"To maybe find a new love interest or friendship," said Peterson.
It's an unusual quest on this Mother's Day weekend in front of the county jail where you're guaranteed not to hear the usual stories.
