Mom Worries 'Hotel Transylvania 2' Diabetes Joke Will Make Her Son A Target For Bullies
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A scene from a newly released children's movie has a local mother scared it'll make her diabetic son a target for bullies.
"Hotel Transylvania 2" is about vampires and monsters and, it's supposed to be cute. But Alicia Pescetti is horrified by one scene.
"There's no way to explain to a 6-year-old that what they're trying to accomplish is a joke," she said.
Her son has Type 1 juvenile diabetes and has to regulate his blood sugar and insulin daily.
"It's hard to explain to kid that at any given moment he could die," she said.
In one scene, a character says "And remember, the scariest monster of all is diabetes," referring to the disease.
"This could definitely open up diabetic children to bullying, because they call it the scariest monster off all. So, because my son has diabetes is he now a monster?" she said.
Other parents CBS13 spoke to didn't see it that way. They didn't remember the scene, while one child said they did but didn't think the joke was funny.
Pescetti wants audiences to know that Type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating a lot of sugar and there's nothing her son did to get the disease. She wrote an open letter to Sony Pictures asking them to remove the scene.
