Man Shot By Modesto Police Officer During Confrontation

MODESTO (CBS13) -- An officer-involved shooting in Modesto is under investigation.

Police say the suspect called officers to his home in the 900 block of Helen Avenue on Tuesday morning at about 2:18 a.m.

When they tried to find out what was happening there, the suspect reportedly got upset and told officers he had guns and explosives inside. Police say he appeared to be under the influence.

Police tried to negotiate for about an hour but say the suspect got increasingly combative and then came at them in a threatening manner, at which point one of the officers shot him.

"He continued making threats that he was armed with a handgun, he had explosives and threatened to shoot the officers," said Lt. Rick Armendariz.

The suspect is in stable condition in an area hospital. Neighbors identified him as "Charles" and a car in his driveway is registered to Charles Scudder, 51. Police didn't immediately confirm his identity, though.

The officer is on paid administrative leave per department policy during the internal and criminal investigations.
