Modesto Is Latest City To Float Sales Tax Measure For More Police
MODESTO (CBS13) — Modesto voters are the latest to consider a sales-tax increase to pay for more police and city services.
Measure X would increase the city's sales tax by one cent, and the revenue generated would be overseen by an 11-member committee appointed by the City Council.
Sacramento passed a similar measure in November and it's provided more police for the city. The city of Stockton is considering a similar measure.
In the last five years, Modesto has cut 120 police positions.
"This is an investment in the future safety and vibrancy of our city and that's what cops do, cops matter," said former police chief Mike Harden.
The campaign is using crime victims to share messages on YouTube, including a mother recalling a recent home invasion where her son was beaten.
Like many other cities, property- and sales-tax revenue have dropped since 2008.
While supporters point to the $26 million the measure would generate—half of which would be earmarked for public safety—not everyone wants to pay for more police.
"Libraries, education and anything else would be fine," said neighbor Vince Abeyta.
If it's passed, the sales tax would expire in six years. The measure would also allow the city to use some of the money for quality of life improvements, such as street repairs.
