Modesto Auto Body Shop Open Since '40s Closes Its Doors

MODESTO (CBS13) -- A Modesto auto shop that has been in business since 1943 closed its doors today. We spoke to the owners who blame the economy and changes within the industry for the company's failure.

It's a bittersweet ending to a long ride.

"We've been evaluating our bottom line the last several months," said Karen Starn Dyer, president of Ray Starn Auto Body.

After spending almost seven decades fixing cars in downtown Modesto, Ray Starn Auto Body is closing its doors.

"It's become very challenging and I do not want to end on a negative note. I want us to go out feeling good about what we do," said Karen.

Second, even third generation customers have grown to trust the local business.

"Every where you turn, there's a little piece of history," said a customer.

Some things have stayed the same over the years. The staff still uses an antique invoice printer.

Karen worked for her father Ray back in the 50's as a parts girl.

"[I] had a little red pickup driving around picking up parts. I had a blast!" said Karen.

After he passed away, she took over. Now the final chapter is here and the economy and industry changes are to blame. As workers prepare to lock up for the final time, well wishes and thank-yous pour into the shop.

The company owns the building, and Karen says they may lease it out.
