Mesa Verde High Drama Department Vandalized

CITRUS HEIGHTS (CBS13) -- The Mesa Verde High School drama department is reeling from the loss of several high-priced equipment items after the building was broken into over the weekend.

According to drama director Deni Scofield, a laptop, LCD projector, keyboard, two amps, two cordless microphones, a monitor and random small items were stolen from the department Sunday night.

Thieves ripped open the vent to Scofield's office door. "They decided to spend a lot of time to break into the office," she said.

The monetary loss was estimated at $7,000. Some of the equipment is covered by insurance, according to San Juan Unified School District spokesman Trent Allen.

"They're looking for items that they can sell and make some money," said Scofield, who paid for some of the equipment herself.

Scofield called the theft "a huge loss" and was disheartened, especially considering the department was also vandalized last year, but she said the students would prevail.

"They can steal our stuff, but they're not going to steal what we're all about," she told CBS13's Maria Medina.

Scofield's students agreed.

"It won't bring us down because we've practiced in here with zero equipment before," said Jesse Bascom.

Police don't have any real suspect information to go on at this point other than someone saying they saw two kids leaving the building. A school custodian discovered the break-in and notified Scofield before school Monday morning.
