Memorial Held At Capitol Steps For Ambassador Chris Stevens
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The body of the former Davis resident Ambassador Chris Stevens arrived back on American soil Friday, days after he and three others were killed in a vicious attack at the U.S. Embassy in Libya.
With candles lit and flags held with pride, more than 100 people gathered at the center of our state's democracy on the shadow of the capitol steps to remember a man who fought for freedom in some of the darkest parts of the world.
"He went to Benghazi while the bombs were falling. While Kadafi was bombarding that city, he went there to show support for the people there," said Basim Alkarra with the Council on Islamic Relations.
Some in this crowd are Libyan-Americans who came to say they're sorry for the violence that took Ambassador Stevens' life.
"We are not proud of what happened and we're here to show what a good Libyan would do. And we're here to show that Ambassador Chris Stevens was one of our heroes," said Mawada Ezubiak.
He was a hero with roots in our own backyard, spending part of his childhood in Davis.
He is a man who many say was "all in" when it came to making a difference.
"He joined the Peace Corps. He went to Morocco; he cared about that region. He wanted freedom for the people in that region," said Alkarra.
It's a region still reeling from the attack that claimed his life -- a region the world is watching with more than a nervous glance.
"His death, no matter the motivation behind his death ends up being, it's a huge loss for Libyans and for America as well," said Rima Kalush.
