High Street In Auburn Reopens Following Sinkhole Incident
AUBURN (CBS13) – A major street in Auburn that was closed Friday due to a major sinkhole has reopened.
Police and fire responded to High Street just after 10 p.m. Thursday after a water main broke, sending a plume of water shooting several feet high. The force of the water caused the street to erode and buckle, sending rocks and debris down the street.
It left a hole 4 feet deep and 10 feet long in the middle of the street.
"What's kinda scary is I actually saw tire tracks through that sinkhole. Someone had actually driven over that," said Auburn Police Sgt. Gary Hopping.
Public works crews shut off the water and worked through the night to repair the water main. Water service was restored just before 7 a.m. Friday morning.
"There was no indication yesterday," said Mark Clay, whose business is next to the hole. "It wasn't like the ground was settling or anything. It's freaky."
Crews were hoping to finish repairing the hole by the end of the day Friday.
