MARYSVILLE – Highway 70 in Marysville, which has been a headache for many local drivers, is set to reopen this weekend after the demolition of the Hotel Marysville.

The northbound lanes of the highway have been closed between 3rd and 6th streets since the Hotel Marysville burned in June of last year.

But Caltrans announced Thursday that it plans to begin reopening the highway at 7 p.m. Friday. Crews anticipate the road to be fully open by 11 p.m., just in time for the weekend and ahead of the Monday morning commute.

Caltrans said eastbound 5th Street will remain closed from Highway 70 to D Street as contractors continue to work on the site.

"This marks a bittersweet conclusion for the Marysville Hotel," Marysville Manager Jim Schaad said in a statement. "The journey to resolve the legal, environmental, and safety challenges stemming from the hotel fire has been long and difficult. I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the collaborative efforts of the City, County, Caltrans, and contractor teams."

The hotel, which had been abandoned for years, was destroyed in a fire. It was deemed unsafe and disrupted the local community and commuter traffic due to its position in the city.

In mid-November, the city filed a lawsuit against the hotel's owners, resulting in the property's ownership being transferred to the city. Then demolition began in early December.

Just last week, city officials hinted the property could be developed into a mix of multi-family housing, commercial spaces and possibly a restaurant.
