UPDATE: Escaped Prison Inmate Back In Custody
FOLSOM (CBS13) – A man who escaped from the state prison in Folsom on Sunday was sniffed out by a family's dogs and arrested Monday night in Folsom without incident.
Folsom police officers arrested Marco Cabrera, 32, on Green Valley Road and Shadow Fax Lane at about 6:30 p.m. after neighbors spotted him and called 911. A family's Labrador retrievers had apparently chased Cabrera to the bed of pickup truck, where Folsom officers found him and put him under arrest after 21 hours on the run.
The California State Department of Corrections says Cabrera escaped from the minimum security facility at the California State Prison-Sacramento in Folsom Sunday night. He was processed at the Folsom jail on vehicle theft and robbery charges and then returned to state custody.
Danielle Wirtz says he slept in her backyard, making himself comfortable on the family's patio furniture underneath the redwood trees.
"An eerie feeling," she said.
But before she even knew he'd made himself right at home, Danielle saw Cabrera walking down her driveway.
"I was sitting doing my homework and I looked and sure enough it was him and right away I got on the phone with 911," she said.
She couldn't believe the felon was so close.
"This is crazy," she said. "It was really nerve-wracking. Part of me just wanted to chase after him and I didn't want to lose sight of him but at the same time I didn't know what he was capable of doing so I kind of keep my distance."
But the dogs didn't have a problem chasing after Cabrera.
Now, he's be back behind bars. This time not in minimum security
He's locked up behind the electric fence and instead of just finishing a five-year sentence, he'll have another two to five years tacked onto his already existing one.
Folsom Police say Cabrera attempted to steal a car Sunday night but was thwarted by a group of neighbors.
Police received a call at 9:20 p.m. Sunday that someone stole a vehicle in the 100 block of Esplanade Circle in the Empire Ranch neighborhood.
The victim told police his neighbors blocked the suspect from leaving in the car and that the suspect had run away to a nearby wetlands area.
As Folsom Police began searching for the suspect, they were notified by Cal State Prison-Sacramento that they had an escaped inmate.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, El Dorado County Sheriff's Department and California Highway Patrol assisted in the search.
After investigating, Folsom Police confirmed Cabrera was the suspect in the attempted vehicle theft.
Cabrera arrived at Cal State Prison-Sacramento in August 2011 to serve a five-year sentence for assault with a firearm, transportation/sale of marijuana, corporal injury on a spouse, possession of an assault weapon, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by an ex-felon. He is from Tulare County.
Cabrera escaped from a minimum-security area of the prison, which is located outside of the maximum security perimeter of the prison, through an unlocked window.
