Man Shot Twice During Police Shootout In Fairfield
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) -- One woman's fear and a hunch turned into a case of attempted murder on a police officer. CBS13's Ron Jones was in Fairfield with the apartment shootout.
"I just heard the gunshots. I was sitting down watching TV," said nearby resident Delores Sylvan.
"This makes me nervous," said Shauntel Frazier, a nearby resident.
Police say after what happened at there apartment, there is reason to be. The Woodsong Village apartment complex on North Texas Street was on lockdown.
"And then I heard gunshots, but I don't know who was shooting who," said a woman who wanted to stay anonymous.
Police received a call from family members of the 19-year-old victim saying their daughter was in danger in the apartment. They said her boyfriend, 20-year-old Jordan Hughes of Vallejo, had assaulted her in Vallejo and was possibly hiding in her home in Fairfield, waiting for her with a gun.
"That's absurd," said Krista Miller, a resident at the apartment building.
Police say Hughes has a violent past and was even considered suicidal. Officers didn't see him inside, but they thought he might be behind a locked bathroom door. When they got inside the apartment, they kicked in the bathroom door and that's when Hughes opened fire. Officers returned fire and took up safe positions.
Neighbors heard the shots and some are still afraid to show their faces.
Ron: When you heard the gunshots what was going through your mind?
Woman: Staying in the house and hope the bullet doesn't go through my wall.
"The sheriff came to our door and told us to evacuate," said a nearby resident.
Within hours, Hughes surrendered after being shot twice.
"Is it pretty safe? For the most part," said Miller.
Some neighbors say they're moving out.
"I thought it was a really nice area but i'm getting a little bit concerned," said Shauntel.
The good news in this story is that no one was injured. The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he is now in stable condition.
