Man Sentenced 50 Years To Life In Baby's Beating Death
NORWALK (AP) — Los Angeles County prosecutors say a man has been sentenced to 50 years to life in prison for the beating death of his 9-month-old daughter.
Deputy District Attorney Heba Matta said in a statement that Jose Tulio Deras received the maximum sentence in a Norwalk court Wednesday.
A jury deliberated for just 10 minutes before finding Deras guilty of the 2011 killing and subsequent sexual assault of his wife.
Matta said Deras was watching his daughter and 2-year-old stepson when he punched the baby many times in the chest and hit over the head with a shoe in response to her crying. The prosecutor says Deras tied up and sexually assaulted his wife when she returned home after the baby had died.
The 2-year-old was not hurt.
