Man Killed In Fight Outside Sacramento DMV Recently Welcomed Second Child Into The World
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A fight outside a Sacramento Department of Motor Vehicles office has left one man dead and another in police custody.
According to his father, Antoine Michael, 33, just had a baby less than a week ago with his girlfriend.
Michael died after he was attacked in broad daylight outside the DMV on Broadway.
"There's a lot of confusion, wondering why this had to happen," said Anthony Michael.
He's learned the news no parent wants to hear. He had just spoken to his son just hours before he died.
"He had his struggles like everyone does, young man trying to better himself, he was going to school there, and he had just called me this morning to let me know he had passed his semester," he said.
According to his father, Antoine was attending culinary school in the Sacramento area and had a part-time job with the Sacramento River Cats. His second daughter, Eva, was born on Saturday.
"He had a bounce in his voice, he was talking about his new daughter. he was trying to find a niche for himself," he said.
According to family, Antoine was sitting in his car when he was approached by a man. Once he stepped out, he was attacked, sucker punched and didn't seem to see it coming.
"As soon as I got here, there's someone out here on the ground, people saying he was hit, ambulance came, and from there it was pretty much chaos," said Christopher Walker.
"I guess there was a fight, guy fell back hit his head, I thought he was unconscious," said Ryan Walsh.
Antoine was rushed to UC Davis Medical Center where he died of his injuries
The DMV office closed for the rest of the day as crime scene investigators gathered evidence. The California Highway Patrol says no weapons seemed to be used.
Now his family is searching for answers and remembering a man they say was on the right path.
The CHP says it has a suspect in custody, but it's not clear whether Antoine knew his attacker. No other information is being provided as this is an ongoing investigation.
