Man Killed By Off-Duty CHP Officer In Modesto Identified

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) -- Police say a suicidal university student escaped from a mental facility and was trying to break into Modesto homes when he was shot to death by an off-duty California Highway Patrol Officer.

A family who helped care for 19-year-old Ricky Miranda tells the Modesto Bee that the California State University, Stanislaus, freshman told them Saturday morning he wanted to die.

Duane and Julie Brooks called sheriff's deputies to their rural Oakdale home and Miranda was taken to Doctors Behavioral Health Center for psychiatric evaluation.

Modesto police say he escaped hours later and was shot to death by the off-duty CHP officer while trying to break into homes. The name of the officer and details of the shooting haven't been released.
