Man Jailed After Craigslist Threat
CALAVERAS COUNTY (CBS13) -- A former Valley Springs resident was arrested after posting a threat against Calaveras County deputies on the website Craigslist.
James Hearne, 33, was arrested in his New York home by FBI agents after allegedly posting a message titled "Want to ambush a Calaveras deputy?" on the popular website's "Rants and Raves" section.
A website reader contacted the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department about the post, sparking a week-long investigation into the identity of the author.
"It would be concerning if we lost a fellow deputy because of a posting on Craigslist," said Sgt. Anthony Eberhardt of the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department.
Craigslist removed the post and detectives tracked Hearne to his home, 2,000 miles away from Calaveras County.
FBI investigators said Hearne admitted to making the threats but never said what drove him to write the posts.
Hearne hasn't yet been charged for making the threats; the FBI arrested on charges of illegally possessing guns.
