Man Found Guilty In 2010 Oak Park Home Explosion
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - "I love you," were the final words his daughter yelled out to him before being cuffed and taken to jail.
Their cries rang out in the hallway as they realized Robert Durst would not be going home. In less than a day a jury found Durst guilty of opening a gas line inside his neighbor's home and lighting a birthday candle. The explosion sent four firefighters to the hospital.
Durst spoke to CBS13 right after his arrest.
"I did not do this. I did not," Durst said to CBS13 in July 2010.
But Durst confessed to detectives. Those interrogation tapes were played in court and painted him as a man with a grudge against his neighbor over a billing dispute for handy work.
His attorney tried to convince jurors that detectives used threats and mind games to coerce Durst into a false confession but jurors didn't buy it.
Alternate juror William Jackson says the evidence was strong against Durst, but he says jurors didn't think about just him when they reached their verdict.
"They said it was really hard, and I think it was really hard, you know you got his daughters," said Jackson.
