Man Faces Life In Prison After Pot Bust
SACRAMENTO (AP) — A Northern California man is facing the possibility of life in federal prison after authorities say they seized marijuana plants worth millions of dollars on properties he owned in rural Trinity County.
Prosecutors said Thursday that William Barsanti was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of cultivating marijuana and conspiring to cultivate marijuana.
The charges come after deputies and Drug Enforcement Administration agents said they seized 2,769 marijuana plants and five pounds of processed marijuana on three of Barsanti's properties near the Trinity County community of Junction City.
U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Lauren Horwood says the 26-year-old Barsanti did not enter a plea during his initial court appearance.
Court records show he is free after posting a $100,000 bond co-signed by his parents.
Prosecutors say Barsanti could get life in prison if he's convicted on the conspiracy charges.
