Man Convicted In Death Of Shelter Volunteer
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- A 54-year-old man has been convicted of striking a Sacramento homeless shelter volunteer with his car and causing ultimately fatal injuries.
Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced Wednesday that a jury found Jeffrey Crayton Yelverton guilty of voluntary manslaughter and felony hit-and-run in the death of Thomas Deollos.
Prosecutors say Yelverton was seen speeding past the Loaves and Fishes shelter in March 2010 when several workers attempted to stop him. Instead of slowing down, Yelverton reportedly drove directly toward Deollos and hit him.
Deollos was severely injured and died two months later.
Prosecutors say that after hitting Deollos, Yelverton drove to a nearby mall and tried to report the incident as an attempted robbery in which he acted in self-defense.
Yelverton is scheduled for sentencing July 15 in Sacramento Superior Court.
