Man Charged With Hate Crime After Assault In Davis
DAVIS (CBS13) -- Police arrested a man on hate crime charges after he allegedly attacked a convenience store clerk Saturday morning.
Peter Lloyd Zuniga, 25, entered the Quick Shop Market on the 1900 block of East 8th Street shortly after 7:30 a.m., asking for matches from the 45-year-old employee behind the counter, according to the Davis Police Department.
When the clerk told him she didn't have any matches, Zuniga allegedly store two lighters and walked out of the business. Police said Zuniga came back to the store 10 minutes later and began cursing at the woman, jumping the counter and physically attacking her.
The woman tried to run, but Zuniga chased her outside, knocking her down and kicking her repeatedly, police said. The victim suffered a broken nose and concussion in the attack.
Zuniga was located at his home a few blocks away and arrested later Saturday morning, police said. Investigators believe Zuniga attacked the woman because of her Russian heritage.
Zuniga was booked on charges of robbery, assault, committing a hate crime and making threats to Davis Police Officers after his arrest. He is being held on $180,000 bail.
