Father Arrested, Child Safe After Standoff In North Sacramento
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Deputies said a man is in custody and his child is safe after a standoff in North Highlands, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said on Sunday.
The scene was at a residence in the 6400 block of Channing Drive, just northeast of McClellan Park.
The father was arrested and faces a charge of child endangerment, according to sheriff's department spokesperson Rod Grassmann.
Investigators said there were guns inside the home that are legally owned.
Grassmann said that the initial call was made by the man's significant other, who is the child's mother. Authorities described the initial situation as a welfare check that occurred at around 10:15 a.m.
The situation forced six homes in the area to evacuate and two others were sheltering in place.
"I got my son in there with me. So, very, very concerned. Especially because it was somebody knocking on the door and saying, 'Hey, get out!' You know? Pretty nervous about it," said Edward Stephens, who lives on Channing Drive.
It was a nerve-racking day to say the least in this North Highlands neighborhood.
"I was basically cabling a sewage drain and was approached by an officer to evacuate that they had a hostage at gunpoint," said Joseph Dannible, a witness.
