Deputies Release Identity Of Man Accused Of Firing At Deputies
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) – The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department has identified the man accused of allegedly trading gunfire with deputies and shooting his wife late Sunday night.
Deputies responded to reports of a man firing rifle shots into the air on the 6500 block of Melrose Drive shortly after 9:30 p.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found the man sitting next to his wife on a porch.
After authorities ordered the man to surrender, shots were fired at deputies, who returned fire.
The suspect allegedly shot his wife and then retreated into his home. The wounded woman crawled away from the house and was rushed to the hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been released, but she was reportedly conscious and responsive when she was transported away from the scene.
The suspect remained in the home for about 45 minutes, and then surrendered without incident to authorities. While the man exited his home, his grandchild ran out of the house and jumped onto his back, clinging to him. The man was taken into custody and the child was quickly removed from the scene.
The suspect has been identified as 54-year-old Christopher Miears. The circumstances leading up to the incident have not been released. Miears is facing charges of attempted murder, domestic violence – corporal injury to a spouse and battery. He is ineligible for bail.
The deputy involved in the shooting is a 32-year-old who has been with the department for 10 years. He is on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
