Lodi Still Seeking Christmas Tree After First Two Go Down

LODI, Calif. (AP) -- Lodi officials just trying to bring a little holiday spirit into town are wondering if they've run into a Christmas curse.

So far, two attempts to erect a Christmas tree in the downtown plaza have been thwarted.

The first tree, a 28-foot white fir, was vandalized last week in a trailer off Interstate 80, where the tree farm's owner had left it overnight while delivering it from the Sierras. Officials told the Lodi News-Sentinel that someone lopped off the top portion of the tree.

Then a Rocklin resident generously offered up a 60-foot redwood from his front yard. But as volunteers moved the tree Tuesday, its delicate branches fell off.

The Downtown Lodi Business Partnership is now looking for another donor and hoping the third time's a charm.
