Legalize It! Clotheslines No Longer Banned In California
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Californians can now hang their clothes outside to dry—something that was actually illegal in some communities.
The new law prevents neighborhood associations for coming after residents for having clotheslines.
The idea is simple: Hang your clothes out to dry, save energy that would have been used by the dryer.
Robin Weld is living the simple life. The Earth-loving woman uses candles for light, a clay pot stuffed with sand instead of a refrigerator ...
"As the water in the sand evaporates, it cools the food down," she said.
… and a toilet sink to wash her hands.
"The water that you wash your hands with gets reused for the next flush," she said.
But it's the clothesline in the backyard was banned in her neighborhood and in many other places across California for being unsightly.
"My grandma used to say let the lord do the drying," she said. "I think it's beautiful, because it's what we are meant to be doing."
But don't start stringing lines between your front yard trees—the law still implies clotheslines are meant for backyards.
