Last Swan Out Of San Francisco Lagoon After Killing

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco animal control has removed the last remaining swan from a lagoon at the Palace of Fine Arts for protection.

The swan named Blanche was moved Wednesday to the San Francisco Zoo, where she will stay temporarily. Officials feared she could be attacked during the Thanksgiving holiday after someone killed her sister last weekend.

The 13-year-old swan will undergo a veterinary checkup at the zoo. She likely won't return home until the city completes safety improvements sometime in January.

Swans were part of the original plan for the Palace of Fine Arts when it was built for the Pan Pacific Exposition in 1915, but their numbers have dwindled in the lagoon over the years.

Authorities are offering a $500 reward for information leading to the conviction of last week's swan killer.
