LA Dodger Arrested For Reckless Driving, Evading West Sacramento Police
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - From running the bases to running from the law, a Major League Baseball player was arrested in West Sacramento Saturday.
He's accused of leading police on a wild chase; but after a short pursuit near his home in West Sacramento, police caught and cuffed 26-year-old Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Justin Sellers.
"There's probably been three other times that we've chased him," said West Sacramento Police Department Lt. Tod Sockman.
Officers say for the past few months they have received calls that the infielder was driving recklessly on his off-road motorcycle in a neighborhood with children everywhere. However, the ball player would take off and get away each time.
"It's not a good place to be speeding," said one resident. "Very lucky he didn't kill somebody."
Then, Saturday afternoon, there was another call about Sellers' erratic motorcycle moves; but, this time there was an officer close by.
"Right after the officer got behind him, the motorcycle went off road and took off," said Sockman.
"When you start talking about high speed chases, and police cars, and kids on the street, yeah, that's pretty scary stuff," father Charles Alford said.
Officers boxed Sellers into a perimeter before he finally gave up. He was arrested for reckless driving and evading police.
"We didn't know who he was when we were chasing him, and we didn't know his connection to the LA Dodgers," said Sockman.
For area parents like Alford, he's relieved no one was hurt, but is saddened about the situation.
"It's unfortunate," said Alford. "You got these guys that are out here playing sports, and, you know, kids like mine look at them like heroes."
It is not known if Sellers has posted bail. However, his motorcycle was immediately impounded.
