Korean National Swim Team Trains On Tahoe Slopes
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) -- The mountains around Lake Tahoe have produced a number of Olympic skiers over the years.
Now, a half dozen members of the Korean national swim team are hoping some high-altitude, winter workouts will give them a leg up at the 2012 Summer Games in London.
Coach Sung K. Baek says his squad trains at a rec center pool at South Tahoe for three hours in the morning then hits the slopes at area resorts or goes cross-country skiing in the afternoon.
Baek got the idea to use Lake Tahoe for a training camp when he visited the area for his honeymoon in 1998.
He says the high-elevation exercise should help improve his swimmers' stamina. Besides, he says skiing is hard work, but fun. Running all day is boring.
