Kings free up roster space, Fox bypasses extension as potentially bigger deal looms
SACRAMENTO — The Sacramento Kings made another move to give the team more roster flexibility with the start of the new season just days away.
The Kings traded forward Jalen McDaniels, their 2031 second-round draft pick and cash considerations to the San Antonio Spurs for a 2025 top-55 protected second-round pick the Spurs previously acquired from Chicago, ESPN's Shams Charania first reported Monday. Charania said San Antonio plans to waive McDaniels.
McDaniels has career averages of 6.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists. The 26-year-old has played five seasons in the league for the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers and Toronto Raptors.
Sacramento acquired McDaniels from Toronto during this offseason back in June in a trade that sent Davion Mitchell, Sasha Vezenkov and two draft picks to the Raptors.
Fox bets on himself
For the second consecutive off-season, Kings star point guard De'Aaron Fox has bypassed a max extension in hopes of securing an even bigger deal with the team in the future, Charania also was first to report.
Fox was eligible for a three-year, $165 million extension with Sacramento. However, a potentially larger deal looms in the 2025 off-season that could include a four-year, $229 million extension with the team of a five-year, $340 million deal if he makes another All-Star appearance this season.
