GRASS VALLEY – A Nevada County resident has been arrested after he allegedly shot and killed his neighbor's dog, with evidence showing he was in no imminent danger.

The Nevada County Sheriff's Office says, on Monday, they got a 911 call reporting they had seen someone shooting and killing a dog with a shotgun. The caller identified 52-year-old Grass Valley resident Kevin Barber as the suspect, while the dog was later found to be owned by a neighbor.

Deputies soon arrived at Barber's Brooks Road property, where the shooting allegedly occurred, but he had left. Animal control officers soon found Barber down the street and he was arrested by deputies.

Investigators got a search warrant for Barber's property and seized the shotgun allegedly used in the incident. Deputies say a spent shell casing and an unused one were also found.

No indication has been found that Barber was under attack or in imminent danger from the dog, deputies say. The original witness also reported that the dog wasn't acting aggressively.

Barber is facing a charge of animal cruelty and he's been booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility.
