Jury Returns Murder Conviction In Death Of Sacramento Woman Whose Body Was Set On Fire
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A Sacramento County jury on Wednesday convicted a man of stabbing his girlfriend to death and then setting her body on fire in Discovery Park.
Robert Thompson, 37, was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Sharion King, 43. King's body was found on Feb. 14 after the fire was extinguished in the southeast portion of the park near the bike trail. A cyclist reported a pile of leaves burning and King's body was discovered underneath it when firefighters responded.
She was killed by a single stab wound to the heart and her body was saturated with gasoline and set on fire. King's parents told CBS13 in an interview a few days after her death that she had been dating Thompson after meeting him online. They speculated he was after her money and became angry when she wouldn't turn it over.
Thompson faces a potential maximum sentence of 52 years to life because of prior convictions, the district attorney's office said. Sentencing is scheduled for March 1.
