Jury Deadlocks On Charge For School Bomber
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) -- Jurors have deadlocked on one count against a Northern California teenager accused of setting off two pipe bombs at his former high school.
A day after finding 18-year-old Alexander Youshock guilty of attempted murder and weapons charges, the judge on Tuesday declared a mistrial when jurors could not reach a verdict on a remaining count of attempted murder.
San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti says even with the mistrial on the single count, the trial is scheduled to move into the sanity phase.
During that phase, jurors will decide whether Youshock was sane when authorities say he set off two pipe bombs at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo during the 2009 attack.
Youshock's attorneys have argued that he's schizophrenic and therefore not guilty by reason of insanity.
