Jury Convicts Man In Rape, Murder Of Folsom Woman In 2009
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A jury on Wednesday convicted a man in the rape and murder of a 64-year-old Folsom woman three years ago.
Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully announced that Sylvester Griffin, 43, was convicted by jury of murder, rape and first-degree burglary in the 2009 killing of Alice Lynn Murphy.
Murphy lived alone in a senior apartment complex in Folsom. Griffin was a driver for a medical transport company and had a client that lived in the same complex.
Murphy was found dead in her apartment by a friend on Dec. 21, 2009. She had been raped and smothered to death.
DNA evidence was collected at the crime scene. After a match was found in the FBI's DNA database, the Folsom Police Department received notification of Griffin's identity. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Crime Lab confirmed the match that linked Griffin to the scene.
Griffin, formerly of Elk Grove, was tracked down in Columbia, S.C., and arrested in June 2010.
Griffin faces a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Sentencing is scheduled for May 18.
