Judge To Rule On Release Of UC Davis Pepper-Spray Report
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A judge is set to decide whether the University of California can fully release a report on the pepper-spraying of student demonstrators by UC Davis police last fall.
Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo is scheduled to hear arguments Wednesday about whether disclosing parts of the report would violate the privacy of campus police officers.
Two weeks ago, the judge ordered those sections to remain under seal until he makes a final ruling.
The report was produced by a task force created to investigate the Nov. 18 crackdown on Occupy protesters at UC Davis. Video of the incident prompted national outrage.
Attorneys for the police officers say releasing their names and confidential personnel information would violate state laws protecting peace officers' rights.
UC officials say they are committed to the report's full release.
