Jailed UC Davis Student May Get Mental Evaluation
YOLO COUNTY (CBS13) - A jailed U.C. Davis student's criminal case may be put on hold pending a mental evaluation.
Nicholas Benson, 25, was arrested in his pickup truck a week ago after an armed standoff with police outside his home.
The standoff ended when officers tased Benson and wrestled him to the ground.
Police found with an assault rifle, a shotgun, and three rounds of ammunition in his truck.
Benson was arrested for making terrorist threats, carrying a loaded weapon in a public place, possession of an illegal assault weapon and resisting arrest.
Benson is a 7th year college senior who may have had trouble fitting in on campus. He rushed a UC Davis fraternity but not get a bid.
An attorney representing Benson is calling for a mental evaluation and a transfer to a mental health facility.
If a mental evaluation is granted, Benson's criminal trial could be put on hold for months.
Right now Benson is being held in the Yolo County Jail on a million dollars bail.
Benson has no criminal record in Yolo County where he grew up and has been going to college.
