Jailed UC Davis Student May Get Mental Evaluation

YOLO COUNTY (CBS13)  - A jailed U.C. Davis student's criminal case may be put on hold pending a mental evaluation.

Nicholas Benson, 25, was arrested in his pickup truck a week ago after an armed standoff with police outside his home.

The standoff ended when officers tased Benson and wrestled him to the ground.

Police found with an assault rifle, a shotgun, and three rounds of ammunition in his truck.

Benson was arrested for making terrorist threats, carrying a loaded weapon in a public place, possession of an illegal assault weapon and resisting arrest.

Benson is a 7th year college senior who may have had trouble fitting in on campus.  He rushed a UC Davis fraternity but not get a bid.

An attorney representing Benson is calling for a mental evaluation and a transfer to a mental health facility.

If a mental evaluation is granted, Benson's criminal trial could be put on hold for months.

Right now Benson is being held in the Yolo County Jail on a million dollars bail.

Benson has no criminal record in Yolo County where he grew up and has been going to college.
